In 1912 werd roestvrij staal bij toeval ontdekt in Engeland. Harry Brearley vond roestvrij staal uit, maar dit was niet zijn oorspronkelijke bedoeling, het was een volledig toevallig product.
Harry Brearley was working for a gun manufacturer and trying to find more durable materials. The inner diameter of the gun wears too quickly due to heat and exhaust gases. He tried adding 10-20 percent chromium to the steel. He didn't properly handle the failed batches, just left them outside. A few months later, he found these steel was not rusted, so he discovered stainless steel.
Anderen zeiden dat hij bij het analyseren van het staal/chroommengsel onder een microscoop het eerst moest etsen met salpeterzuur, en ontdekten dat dit materiaal buitengewoon goed bestand was tegen corrosie.

Brearley vroeg in 1915 een Amerikaans patent aan en publiceerde later dat jaar een artikel om roestvrij staal in de wereld te introduceren in de New York Times.
